Canterbury Chess Club 2016-2017

The Canterbury Chess Club is about to begin its 22th year. Come be a part of a growing club that turns in impressive results year after year. The Lower School Beginners and Intermediate Instructional sessions will begin Monday, September 12, 2016. The Advanced Instructional sessions will begin Thursday, September 8, 2016.
Scholastic Chess offers many benefits. Studies over the past years show the positive benefits of chess on cognitive development, critical thinking, creativity, reasoning, memory and math. Plus, it's just plain fun. For boys and girls at the primary level in particular, few endeavors teach all of the above plus sportsmanship, healthy competitiveness and other important social skills that aid in the emotional development of children.
Canterbury is fortunate to have Jim Dean, four-time Indiana State Champion, returning as our coach. Jim does a wonderful job each year making each club meeting fun, developing our kids' skills and achieving tournament results that made Canterbury students, parents and faculty proud.
PLEASE NOTE: The club will once again be hosting the Indiana State Grade Championships on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at the High School.
Beginner Instructional sessions will be held from 3:15 to 4:00 p.m. in the LS Art room starting on Monday, September 12. Students will meet in EDC, and then will be escorted to the classroom. Children not picked up at the LS Art room at 4 pm will be returned to EDC.
Intermediate Instructional sessions will be held from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. in the LS Art room beginning Monday, September 12. From 3:15 to 4:00 p.m., this class will gain playing experience while having some fun prior to the Intermediate Instructional Session. From 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., the Intermediate Instructional session will be held. Students will meet in EDC, and then will be escorted to the classroom. Children not picked up at the LS Art Room at 5 pm will return to EDC.
Advanced Instructional sessions will meet from 3:15 to 5 p.m. in the LS Art Room starting on Thursday, September 8. Students will meet in EDC, and then will be escorted to the classroom. Children not picked up at 5 pm will return to EDC.
Middle School sessions 3:20 to 4:30 p.m. in room 208 starting on Wednesday, September 7. Middle School chess players are offered the option each week of attending Thursday night Advanced Chess, from 3:15 to 5:00 pm in the LS Art room, for improved scheduling flexibility. So, each week, they may choose to attend Chess Club on EITHER Wednesday night or Thursday night. Students not picked up at the LS Art room after the session will be sent to after school care.
If you have any questions about which session is most appropriate for your child, please contact Coach Jim Dean at jdean@canterburyschool.org or (260) 348-4538. All students, regardless of their level of ability, are encouraged to come. Don't let inexperience stop you. Each year we have many first-time players as well as returning, more experienced players. We are looking forward to another great year of chess and all that it brings with it: challenge, growth, fellowship, tournament play and, of course, fun!
